Den(marks) the spot

For my next trip, I headed to Copenhagen! It was my first solo trip in a long time, but with such cheap flights and Ryan busy it seems like a good idea.

I think most people are surprised, but I have never actually been to Denmark before so I got to check another country off my list. I am now at 23 countries and counting! Don’t worry, I have plans to hit a few more in the next month :). It is looking optimistic to hit my goal of 30 countries before I am 30.

For only 80€ I got a round trip ticket only a week in advance! I landed to 20 mph winds and an absolute downpour 😂 It was quite a warm welcome! No worries, I popped into a local cafe and enjoyed my book while the rain passed. Cafe: Atlier September

Copenhagen is known for being one of the happiest countries in the world. Some say, it is due to the idea of hygge. This doesn’t translate directly to English, but the best definition is “a feeling of coziness.” Even though I would have loved some warmer weather this trip I am glad to got to spend some time embracing hygge.

This trip, because it ended up colder than I would have liked I spent a lot of time eating and in cafes! The good news is that I finally got to have a cinnamon roll in Europe. 10/10 would recommend pastries in Copenhagen. Fun fact, there is a lot of influence from the Austrians and particularly the Viennese which probably it why I like them so much :). Amsterdam really lags behind the rest of Europe on their pastries….. I also walked through the Trovehallerne market and got gelato! Bakery: Skt. Peders Bageri

To wrap up the day, I got some pictures at Hyhavn during the only 10 minutes the sun was out all day!

The next morning, I stopped by another quaint cafe for breakfast before a free walking tour of the city. Cafe: Raw 42

I joined a walking tour and it was quite comprehensive with us going all over the city in 3 hours! Additionally, I met a few other solo travels to explore with the rest of the day. below are a few pictures of the city hall, palace, jumping on the city trampolines, and a few more of Nyhavn.

We walked around an area of Copenhagen called Freetown Christina which is a mostly hippie/ artist area where I was told the police are more lack on the rules. Basically there were weed stands everyone 😂 It was fun to check out the art and chill with a beer. I only have a few pictures as you aren’t allowed to take pictures while there.

Next, me and a few other travels checked out the food halls around Copenhagen. The first one, which I didn’t get any good pictures of was called broens gadekøkken and the other was called Reffen. We rented bikes through Donkey Republic on their app to bike to Reffen and it was well worth it! It was so fun and I can imagine it being really popular on a sunny summer day! I tried this peanut butter African curry dish and Hungarian goulash. The last picture from Google shows what it looked like in the summer, but imagine me shivering with hot cider around a fire instead of people in shorts and t-shirts.

On my bike ride back to my hotel I snapped a few pictures of Nyhavn lite up at night- it really is magical!

The next morning, I got some pictures on Magstræde street as it is so colorful and grabbed breakfast on Nyhavn.

Next, I took a boat ride through the canals. Overall, Copenhagen reminded me a lot of Amsterdam with the water and bikes. Fun fact: it is strongly emphasized in schools that kids wear helmets while biking so most kids and about 20%ish of adults have helmets on. In contrast, in 6 months of living in Amsterdam, I have probably seen like 5 adults wearing helmets while biking through the city 😂

After the boat tour, I biked to see the little mermaid that Copenhagen is famous for (it wasn’t super exciting) and them continued to the Vesterbro neighborhood. I tried a local brewery to write my postcards at and then grabbed BBQ.

I didn’t get the famous smorgasbord while in Copenhagen…. The BBQ just looked so good! One think worth noting before visiting Copenhagen is the cost. Copenhagen doesn’t use the euro (although everyone takes card or euros) so it is quite expensive. For example, this BBQ sandwich, side of beans, and beer cost me $32. I guess the expensive prices of food, activities, etc balances out the super cheap flights! Brewery: Mikkeller and BBQ is Warpigs Brew Pub.

It has been fun traveling again and I am excited for several more upcoming trips in the works! Thanks for following along!
